William Payne Stewart, an American professional golfer, died on October 25, 1999, at the age of 42. He was tragically killed in an airplane accident. While en route from his home in Orlando, Florida, to Texas for The Tour Championship, the Learjet he was aboard failed to pressurize, leading to the incapacitation of all on board due to hypoxia as the aircraft flew west of Gainesville, Florida. The plane continued on autopilot until it ran out of fuel, subsequently crashing into a field near Mina, South Dakota.
