The nation experienced a wave of genuine grief at the news of McKinley's passing. His casket lay in the East Room of the Executive Mansion, then in state in the Capitol, and was finally transported to Canton by train. Approximately 100,000 people passed by the open casket in the Capitol Rotunda, and an equal number in Canton at the Stark County Courthouse.
