Obituary Announcement
Walter Whitman Jr.
1819 — 1892
Walter Whitman Jr. died on March 26, 1892, at his home in Camden, New Jersey. An autopsy determined the official cause of death to be "pleurisy of the left side, consumption of the right lung, general miliary tuberculosis and parenchymatous nephritis," with lungs diminished to one-eighth capacity due to bronchial pneumonia and an egg-sized abscess eroding a rib. A public viewing was held at his Camden home, attracting over 1,000 visitors in three hours, with his oak coffin heavily adorned with flowers and wreaths. Four days later, he was buried in his commissioned granite mausoleum at Harleigh Cemetery in Camden. A public ceremony, including speeches from friends, live music, and refreshments, was held at the cemetery, with a eulogy delivered by his friend, orator Robert Ingersoll. The remains of his parents, two brothers, and their families were later moved to the mausoleum.
