Robert Nesta Marley, the legendary Jamaican singer, songwriter, and guitarist, passed away on 11 May 1981, at the age of 36, at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Miami, Florida. His death was caused by the spread of acral lentiginous melanoma to his lungs and brain. Marley received a state funeral in Jamaica on 21 May 1981, combining elements of Ethiopian Orthodoxy and Rastafari tradition. He was laid to rest in a chapel near his birthplace in Nine Mile, his casket containing his red Gibson Les Paul guitar, a Bible opened at Psalm 23, and a stalk of cannabis placed by his widow, Rita Marley. Jamaican Prime Minister Edward Seaga delivered the eulogy, recognizing Marley as an indelible part of the nation's collective consciousness. His legacy continues to thrive, evidenced by posthumous awards, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and his enduring influence on music and culture worldwide.
