Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela passed away on 5 December 2013, at approximately 20:50 local time, at his home in Houghton, South Africa. He was 95 years old and had been suffering from a prolonged respiratory infection. South African President Jacob Zuma publicly announced his death on television, initiating ten days of national mourning. A large memorial service was held at Johannesburg's FNB Stadium on 10 December 2013, attended by numerous world leaders. December 8th was designated a national day of prayer and reflection. Mandela's body lay in state from 11 to 13 December at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, followed by a state funeral on 15 December in his home village of Qunu. Tributes and commemorations for the global icon proliferated across media platforms worldwide. His estate, valued at US$4.1 million, was left to his widow, other family members, staff, and educational institutions.
