Upon his death on 5 April 1975, a month of mourning was declared in Taiwan. The Japanese media expressed respect for Chiang. In mainland China, state-run newspapers briefly announced his death with little apparent mourning. The Chinese music composer Hwang Yau-tai wrote the "Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Song" in his honor.
