Jean Sibelius passed away on 20 September 1957, at his home Ainola, at the age of 91, due to a brain haemorrhage. At the time of his death, his Fifth Symphony was being broadcast from Helsinki. The then President of the United Nations General Assembly, Sir Leslie Munro, delivered a eulogy, proclaiming, "Sibelius belonged to the whole world. He enriched the life of the entire human race with his music." He was accorded a state funeral and interred in the garden of Ainola.
