James Abram Garfield Obituary (1831 – 1881)
Obituary Announcement
James Abram Garfield
1831 — 1881
Following his death, James A. Garfield's funeral train, traveling over tracks blanketed with flowers and past flag-adorned houses, transported his body to the U.S. Capitol rotunda. Over 70,000 citizens paid their respects as his body lay in state from September 21 to 23, 1881. The Marine Band leader John Philip Sousa composed "In Memoriam" for the occasion. His body was then transported to Cleveland, Ohio, where more than 150,000 people attended a grand parade of his casket down Euclid Avenue to Public Square. Notable attendees included former Presidents Ulysses S. Grant and Rutherford B. Hayes, and Generals William Sherman, Sheridan, and Hancock. Garfield was temporarily interred in the Schofield family vault in Cleveland's Lake View Cemetery before being permanently interred with great solemnity and fanfare in a mausoleum in the same cemetery on May 19, 1890. Memorials were erected across the country, and his death spurred significant civil service reform.
