Harry Houdini died on October 31, 1926, at Grace Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, at the age of 52. The cause of death was peritonitis, possibly related to appendicitis and potentially exacerbated by punches to his abdomen received about a week and a half earlier from Jocelyn Gordon Whitehead in Montreal. Despite a high fever and acute appendicitis, Houdini performed his final show in Detroit before being hospitalized. His insurance company concluded his death was due to the dressing-room incident and paid double indemnity.
