Gustave Flaubert, the renowned French novelist and leading exponent of literary realism, passed away at Croisset on May 8, 1880, at the age of 58, due to a cerebral hemorrhage. He was interred in the family vault within the cemetery of Rouen. A monument by Henri Chapu was later unveiled at the museum of Rouen in his honor.
