Ferdinand Emmanuel Edralin Marcos Sr., former Philippine President, passed away at St. Francis Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, at 12:40 a.m. (HST) on September 28, 1989, at the age of 72, due to kidney, heart, and lung ailments. His son, Ferdinand Jr., eulogized him, expressing a hope that "friends and detractors alike will look beyond the man to see what he stood for: his vision, his compassion and his total love of country." The Aquino government initially refused to allow his body to be repatriated to the Philippines. Marcos had made an offer to return a significant portion of his wealth for burial in his homeland, which was rejected.
