Christopher Mathewson died of tuberculosis on October 7, 1925, in Saranac Lake, New York, at the age of 45. His death, which occurred on the day the 1925 World Series began, deeply affected the baseball world, with members of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Senators wearing black armbands in his honor. He is interred at Lewisburg Cemetery in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, adjacent to Bucknell University. In 1936, Mathewson was posthumously elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame as one of its first five members, cementing his legacy as one of baseball's all-time greats. His jersey, denoted as "NY" (uniform numbers were not used during his playing era), was retired by the Giants in 1986.
