Charles Robert Darwin died at Down House on 19 April 1882, aged 73, from "angina pectoris," heart disease, anginal attacks, and heart-failure. He had expected to be buried in St Mary's churchyard at Downe. However, due to public and parliamentary petitioning at the request of his colleagues, he was honored by burial in Westminster Abbey. His funeral, attended by thousands, took place on Wednesday, 26 April 1882, close to John Herschel and Isaac Newton.
